How to Collect & Ship Samples

  1. Pushing an auger vertically into the soil to the target depth of the soil profile, checking the depth with a tape measure while catching the soil
Collect — Dig to the Right Depth

After removing the litter and humus layers, dig down to the target depth with an auger or spade, collecting a separate sample for each depth. Do not dig at only one spot; collect from several points within the survey area and mix them evenly to create a representative sample. Physical-property analyses such as three-phase distribution and saturated hydraulic conductivity require an undisturbed sample, so collect it using a 100cc soil can, which is available for rent from the laboratory.

  2. Soil divided one portion per zipper bag, with the filled bags lined up upright and organized
Pack — One Bag per Sample

Never mix samples from different points or depths; place each one separately into its own zipper bag. Remove large foreign matter such as stones, roots, and leaves, and dry wet samples in the shade before bagging to prevent mold and deterioration. Because the required sample volume depends on the number of requested analysis items, please follow the amount you are advised during your phone consultation.

  3. Writing a sample name on a tag attached to a sample bag, with a list of items to record standing beside it
Label — Match the Names to the Request Form

On each bag, write the requester name, sample name (point number), sampling depth, and sampling date. The sample name on the request form and the label on the bag must match exactly, letter for letter, to prevent results from being mixed up. Use a smudge-proof permanent marker, and write on the outer surface or a tag rather than inside the bag.

  4. A box filled with cushioning material holding the sample bags together with the request form, ready for shipping
Pack & Ship — Include the Request Form

Pack the bags in a box, filling empty spaces with cushioning material so the bags are not crushed or burst, and be sure to enclose the completed soil analysis request form. Write the requester name and contact number on the outside of the box so they can be verified on receipt, and after shipping, contact the laboratory to confirm arrival.

Standards vary by itemStandards for sampling depth, number of points, and sample volume vary depending on the purpose and items of analysis. Before preparing your samples, please contact the laboratory (031-572-0127) to confirm the requirements.
